What is a Glucose Tolerance Test?

A glucose tolerance test (GTT) helps to diagnose type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance, a condition that may lead to diabetes. For more information on Diabetes, see the `My Health - Common Problems' tab.

How is the test obtained?

On the morning of the test the phlebotomist will take a first sample reading of blood. This is known as the fasting sample; it provides a comparison for the other test results. You will then be asked to drink 500ml of flat Lucozade, which contains a particular amount of sugar (in the form of glucose) and water. You will then be asked to wait in the waiting room until the next blood sample is required; 2 hours time after you have had the drink.

I've been asked to have a Glucose Tolerance Test, what should i do?

If you have been requested by the Doctor or Nurse to have a Glucose tolerance test, you will need to ask at reception to book a fasting blood test for a glucose tolerance test (GTT). You will be booked two 10 minute appointments 2 hours apart. A fasting blood test means nothing to eat from 10pm the night before your appointment, but you can drink water as it will keep you hydrated and help raise the veins when the phlebotomist needs to take a sample. You must bring with you on appointment a 500ml size bottle of flat Lucozade, you will need to removed the bottle cap to allow the drink to go flat overnight. Smoking may also change the result, so do not smoked after midnight and until the test is completely finished.

Please note you MUST stay in surgery for the 2 hours.

How do i find out my results?

You can find out your results 7-10 days after completing the test, either by phone (please call reception after 10.00 am) or in person at reception.

Key preparation points:

• Book two 10 minute appointments 2 hours apart
• Fast from 10.00 pm the night before your appointment
• Do not smoke after midnight and until the test is completely finished
• Drink plenty of water
• Leave your 500ml Lucozade to go flat overnight
• Remember to bring your lucozade with you to appointment
