What is a PSA Test?

A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is a type of blood test that measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen in a man’s blood.

PSA is produced by the prostate gland (the small gland in between a man’s penis and bladder). Sometimes, depending on your age and the health of your prostate, PSA will leak into the bloodstream.

A raised PSA level can signify prostate conditions, such as an enlarged prostate, prostatitis, a urinary infection or, possibly, prostate cancer.

How is the test obtained?

A PSA test involves providing a sample of blood which will be tested for PSA.

I've been asked to have a PSA Test, what should i do?

If you have been requested by the Doctor or Nurse to have a PSA test, you will need to ask at reception to book a non-fasting blood test. Blood tests normally take 5-10 minutes. We advise patients to drink water prior to testing as it will keep you hydrated and help raise the veins when the phlebotomist needs to take a sample. You must bring with you on appointment your blood test form.

How do i find out my results?

You can find out your results 7-10 days after completing the test, either by phone (please call reception after 10.00 am) or in person at reception. If a GP or Nurse has requested to see you for a follow up appointment, you can book this within the time frame advised by the requesting GP or Nurse.
